Woolcool® Insulated Packaging Honoured
in Observer's Ethical Awards 2010 Observer Ethical Award

Bringing sustainable, biodegradable packaging into the media spotlight, woolcool® insulated packaging has been honoured as runner-up in the prestigious Jupiter Big Idea category of the Observer's Ethical Awards 2010.

A big achievement for The Wool Packaging Company Ltd. and for environmentally responsible packaging, the award was looking for big ideas that can help tackle climate change from companies who are pushing the boundaries of possibility. By reaching the final three, woolcool® was clearly recognised as a positive and practical business initiative that is rising to the challenge of reducing commercial packaging waste.

Among the factors the judges took account, are the following compelling facts about woolcool®:
  • Just 3 articulated lorries are required to delivery 10,000 units of woolcool® insulated packaging in comparison to 10 lorries to deliver the equivalent polystyrene packaging.
  • In 2009, woolcool® is estimated to have saved 65 tonnes of polystyrene or polyethylene from the perishable food delivery sector, much of which would have been sent to landfill.
  • Instead of being man-made from oil, woolcool® uses bi-product fleece of 22 million shearable sheep that are already being reared in the UK largely for meat and is manufactured through minimal, low energy processing.
  • Woolcool® is made entirely from materials that are compostable, biodegradable, recyclable or re-usable.

Demonstrating the breadth of entries in the Big Idea category, the innovative sheep's wool packaging was ultimately pipped to the post by Resomation's water/alkali alternative to burial and cremation, involving lower carbon emissions. The awards were voted for by over 8,000 Guardian readers and judged by a high profile panel ranging from Deborah Meaden, Kate Humble and Ben Fogle to the MD of Ecover, Michael Bremans and former CEO of Cafe Direct, Penny Newman. The ceremony took place at the V&A Museum, London on Thursday 10th June with more information at www.observer.co.uk/ethicalawards.

Among the other winners, Organic food delivery business, Riverford was awarded Best Online Retailer, with Abel and Cole as runner-up and both businesses already use woolcool® for their chilled food deliveries nationwide.

Woolcool® was designed and developed as a sustainable, biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable alternative to polystyrene and polyethylene insulated packaging for the delivery of temperature sensitive products from fresh food to pharmaceuticals. Abundant British sheep's wool provides a natural insulation which is not only the environmentally responsible alternative to polystyrene but has also been proven to keep chilled contents more consistently cooler for longer and is cost-effectively supplied flat packed. Further information about the range of insulated packaging systems is available at www.woolcool.com.

New Sheep's Wool Eco Packaging for Abel and Cole Food Deliveries Abel & Cole

Abel & Cole is providing another good reason for customers to opt for their organic and ethical foods by replacing polystyrene insulated packaging used for chilled deliveries with a biodegradable and recyclable alternative made from sheep's wool. The woolcool® boxes will be used for delivering Abel & Cole's range of fresh meats, fish, dairy produce and perishable deli goods.  The move will mean that their delivery boxes are now 100% biodegradable, recycled or recyclable and will save an incredible 87 40' trailers of polystyrene per year!

Abel & Cole will now be using the ingenious woolcool® insulated packaging which won the the Best Innovation category of the Observer Food Monthly Awards earlier this year. woolcool® is made from British sheep's wool which has been washed, scoured and felted to create the fleecy insulation material, then sealed within recyclable food-grade wrap. The woolcool® insulation is used as liners for Abel & Cole's recyclable cardboard delivery boxes to keep chilled contents cool, below 5°c for at least 24 hours even more effectively than polystyrene.

As with the previous polystyrene packaging, Abel & Cole will be encouraging customers to leave their delivery boxes for collection and re-use but the woolcool® boxes are much more environmentally friendly even beyond their shelf life, as the fleecy insulation  is biodegradable and compostable.

As packaging is becoming increasingly important in the purchasing decision of UK consumers, Abel & Cole are leading the way and offering an easy way for customers to enjoy the highest quality food while staying true to the reduce, reuse and recycle mantra.  For more information go to www.abelandcole.co.uk and www.woolcool.co.uk.

PRESS INFORMATION, 20 MARCH 2009Observer Food Monthly Awards

Shropshire Businesswoman Joins Jamie Oliver
as Observer Food Monthly Award Winner

Angela Morris of Oakley, Market Drayton has just picked up the Observer Food Monthly 'Best Innovation' Award 2009 for her ingenious sheep's wool insulated packaging, 'woolcool'. The award was presented by Mariella Frostrup at a prestigious ceremony in London on Thursday 19th March, with other winners including Jamie Oliver as Food Personality 2009.

woolcool® was conceived and designed by Angela as an environmentally friendly alternative to polystyrene and polyethylene currently used for insulated packaging. The National Trust had first approached Angela on behalf of their tenant farmers and farm shops who wanted more appropriate, 'eco-packaging' to deliver fresh meat and chilled produce direct to the public.

woolcool® is made from 100% British sheep's wool, naturally felted and sealed in recyclable food-grade wrap to create a 50ml thick padded liner for a range of packaging boxes, made from 100% recycled and compostable cardboard.  The wool fibres absorb airborne water molecules and moisture incredibly effectively through tiny perforations in the wrapping to keep chilled produce cool for at least 24 hours.

woolcool®  was described as an 'extraordinary concept' by the Observer Food Monthly judging panel which comprised Alex James, cheese maker; Sheherazade Goldsmith, columnist and environmental campaigner; Tom Parker-Bowles, food writer; Ruth Rogers, owner, the River Café; Jay Rayner, Observer food critic; and Nicola Jeal, OFM editor and chair of the judging panel.

Already proving a huge success, woolcool is the insulated packaging of choice for high profile customers including River Cottage, Daylesford Organics and Riverford Meat Boxes but also numerous farm shops and speciality food suppliers across the UK. Sales increased by over 36% in the pre-Christmas period year-on-year, with orders for over 15,000 units in December alone. Farmers and fresh food suppliers can find more information at www.woolcool.com.

The Observer Food Monthly Awards were introduced six years ago to recognise and promote good honest food and other 2009 winners were as follows: Best Breakfast, The Wolseley, London; Ethical Contribution, Fife Diet; Best Place to Drink, Bramble, Edinburgh; Best Cheap Eat, Byron, London; Best Newcomer, Cornish Sea Salt Co.; Best Sunday Lunch, The Albion, Islington; Best Ethical Restaurant, Riverford Field Kitchen, Devon; Best Independent, Rare Tea Co. London; Best Producer, Carroll's Heritage Potatoes, Northumberland; Outstanding Achievement Fergus Henderson and Best Restaurant, Moro, London.
