New Sheep's Wool Eco Packaging for Abel and Cole Food Deliveries
Abel & Cole is providing another good reason for customers to opt for their organic and ethical foods by replacing polystyrene insulated packaging used for chilled deliveries with a biodegradable and recyclable alternative made from sheep's wool. The woolcool® boxes will be used for delivering Abel & Cole's range of fresh meats, fish, dairy produce and perishable deli goods. The move will mean that their delivery boxes are now 100% biodegradable, recycled or recyclable and will save an incredible 87 40' trailers of polystyrene per year!
Abel & Cole will now be using the ingenious woolcool® insulated packaging which won the the Best Innovation category of the Observer Food Monthly Awards earlier this year. woolcool® is made from British sheep's wool which has been washed, scoured and felted to create the fleecy insulation material, then sealed within recyclable food-grade wrap. The woolcool® insulation is used as liners for Abel & Cole's recyclable cardboard delivery boxes to keep chilled contents cool, below 5°c for at least 24 hours even more effectively than polystyrene.
As with the previous polystyrene packaging, Abel & Cole will be encouraging customers to leave their delivery boxes for collection and re-use but the woolcool® boxes are much more environmentally friendly even beyond their shelf life, as the fleecy insulation is biodegradable and compostable.
As packaging is becoming increasingly important in the purchasing decision of UK consumers, Abel & Cole are leading the way and offering an easy way for customers to enjoy the highest quality food while staying true to the reduce, reuse and recycle mantra. Shropshire Businesswoman Joins Jamie Oliver
as Observer Food Monthly Award Winner
Angela Morris of Oakley, Market Drayton has just picked up the Observer Food Monthly 'Best Innovation' Award 2009 for her ingenious sheep's wool insulated packaging, 'woolcool'. The award was presented by Mariella Frostrup at a prestigious ceremony in London on Thursday 19th March, with other winners including Jamie Oliver as Food Personality 2009.
woolcool® was conceived and designed by Angela as an environmentally friendly alternative to polystyrene and polyethylene currently used for insulated packaging. The National Trust had first approached Angela on behalf of their tenant farmers and farm shops who wanted more appropriate, 'eco-packaging' to deliver fresh meat and chilled produce direct to the public.
woolcool® is made from 100% British sheep's wool, naturally felted and sealed in recyclable food-grade wrap to create a 50ml thick padded liner for a range of packaging boxes, made from 100% recycled and compostable cardboard. The wool fibres absorb airborne water molecules and moisture incredibly effectively through tiny perforations in the wrapping to keep chilled produce cool for at least 24 hours.
woolcool® was described as an 'extraordinary concept' by the Observer Food Monthly judging panel which comprised Alex James, cheese maker; Sheherazade Goldsmith, columnist and environmental campaigner; Tom Parker-Bowles, food writer; Ruth Rogers, owner, the River Café; Jay Rayner, Observer food critic; and Nicola Jeal, OFM editor and chair of the judging panel.
Already proving a huge success, woolcool is the insulated packaging of choice for high profile customers including River Cottage, Daylesford Organics and Riverford Meat Boxes but also numerous farm shops and speciality food suppliers across the UK. Sales increased by over 36% in the pre-Christmas period year-on-year, with orders for over 15,000 units in December alone. Farmers and fresh food suppliers can find more information at www.woolcool.com.
The Observer Food Monthly Awards were introduced six years ago to recognise and promote good honest food and other 2009 winners were as follows: Best Breakfast, The Wolseley, London; Ethical Contribution, Fife Diet; Best Place to Drink, Bramble, Edinburgh; Best Cheap Eat, Byron, London; Best Newcomer, Cornish Sea Salt Co.; Best Sunday Lunch, The Albion, Islington; Best Ethical Restaurant, Riverford Field Kitchen, Devon; Best Independent, Rare Tea Co. London; Best Producer, Carroll's Heritage Potatoes, Northumberland; Outstanding Achievement Fergus Henderson and Best Restaurant, Moro, London.
