A UK Government funded initiative is backing research and development of an innovative sheep's wool packaging for pharmaceuticals to help combat the global problem of more than 50% wastage in vaccines, as reported by the World Health Organisation. The Wool Packaging Company Ltd. based near Market Drayton, has been awarded a six figure grant by the Technology Strategy Board to focus on a specialised pharmaceuticals version of the award winning WoolcoolŽ insulated packaging to protect temperature sensitive vaccines in transit.

WoolcoolŽ insulated packaging has already been proven to maintain stable internal temperatures between 2°C and 8°C in excess of 72 hours, more effectively than other packaging including polystyrene cartons, polyethylene foam or air pocket products. The felted wool insulation also provides more effective cushioning protection for fragile contents, such as vaccine vials. These two factors alone, demonstrate how important the grant to further research and develop the concept could prove in tackling the challenges of distributing vaccines so they arrive in a fit condition for use.

As an additional advantage, WoolcoolŽ packaging products are an entirely sustainable solution because sheep's wool is a naturally effective insulation which is available in abundance worldwide. Sheep's wool is also compostable and other elements of the WoolcoolŽ packaging are recycled or recyclable.

WoolcoolŽ was originally designed for the food sector, to provide sustainable insulated packaging for the direct delivery of fresh and frozen foods. Since its launch in 2009, WoolcoolŽ has gone from strength to strength and The Wool Packaging Company Ltd. now supplies diverse food retailers nationwide, from Abel & Cole to Fortnum and Mason. The product range includes WoolcoolŽ insulated courier boxes, WoolcoolŽ insulated pouches and WoolmailŽ insulated envelopes. More information regarding WoolcoolŽ is available at www.thewoolpackagingcomnpany.com or by calling 01603 415008.

The Technology Strategy Board is a business-led government body which works to create economic growth by ensuring that the UK is a global leader in innovation. Sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Technology Strategy Board brings together business, research and the public sector, supporting and accelerating the development of innovative products and services to meet market needs, tackle major societal challenges and help build the future economy. Unique food packaging solutions for 2012 Olympics

The stipulation that food packaging for the London 2012 Olympic Park must be re-usable, widely recyclable or compostable makes woolcool® and woolmail® a godsend for caterers and food retailers planning to supply all kinds of perishable products. The directive is hoped to help LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) achieve its target of sending zero waste to landfill directly from the Olympic Park during the Games.

For catering suppliers bidding to provide products such as fresh meat, fish, dairy products, deli items and ready meals to hotels, restaurants and takeaway outlets in Olympic Park, woolcool® insulated delivery boxes are primarily designed to be reused. The woolcool® packaging is not only strong and hygienic but can also be flat-packed for convenient storage between collections, unlike the bulky, pre-formed polystyrene cartons. With natural sheeps wool providing the insulation, The Wool Packaging Company can also supply woolcool® that is 100% compostable should re-use be impractical due to the nature of the product or client logistics. It is believed that few, if any other packaging supplier will be able to offer an equivalent  insulated packaging solution that is 100% compostable, which could simply make woolcool® the most logistically practical and cost effective cold chain solution.

A further opportunity for takeaway food retailers and hotels within Olympic Park is believed to be in souvenir packaging and for this the woolmail® concept has exciting potential. The insulated woolmail®pouches can be supplied fully branded and sold as souvenir items which will keep hot or chilled food items at the optimum temperature for upto several hours.  The woolmail® pouches would be intended to be reusable by consumers but can also be supplied as 100% compostable.

woolcool® and woolmail®  have been rigorously tested and proven to maintain the temperature of contents more consistently for longer than any other insulated packaging. Both woolcool® and woolmail®  are available in a number of stock sizes and as bespoke packaging solutions.
