  • Deli foods, direct to the door, becomes more viable with woolmail® insulated envelopes
Deli foods, direct to the door, becomes more viable with woolmail® insulated envelopes

From smoked salmon to speciality cheeses, all kinds of perishable deli products can now be sent reliably and cost effectively through the post or by courier using woolmail® insulated envelopes. For the delivery of individual products or chilled items within speciality food hampers, woolmail® is simply the most effective, viable and eco-friendly packaging on the market.

Data tracker tests have proven that woolmail® keeps contents below 5°c for a minimum of 24 hours more effectively and consistently than any other insulated packaging which are chilled with ice packs or gels, including polystyrene cartons, polyethylene foam or air pocket products.

Designed by the multi award winning Wool Packaging Company, woolmail® uses the incredibly effective woolcool® insulation liners in A4, A3 and ‘Large Salmon’ sized envelopes made from recyclable LDPE with an extra secure 15mm self-adhesive strip.

The insulation is made using pure sheep’s wool which maintains temperatures and minimises humidity through the natural ‘air conditioning’ effect of the hygroscopic fibres. For delivering fragile products, the insulation is also incredibly protective and cushioning due to the memory foam effect of the wool. Environmentally responsible too, wool is completely sustainable and biodegradable.

Not only does woolmail® perform better than the alternatives, but offers a cost effective solution for small and lightweight deli foods especially when used for chilled items within hampers as there’s no need for the whole package to be insulated.

In addition to the standard A4, A3 and Large Salmon sizes, The Wool Packaging Company also designs and manufactures bespoke woolmail® envelopes and pouches for speciality food retailers such as Fortnum and Mason. For shipments where all the contents are temperature sensitive, the Wool Packaging Company offers a range of woolcool® insulated packaging boxes and bespoke solutions. More information is available at www.thewoolpackagingcompany.com.

For the delivery of individual pharmaceutical products through the post or temperature sensitive items within general consignments, woolmail® is now the most effective, versatile and eco-friendly packaging on the market.

Data tracker tests have proven that woolmail® keeps contents between 2°c and 8°c for a minimum of 24 hours more effectively and consistently than any other insulated packaging using phase change materials, including polystyrene cartons, polyethylene foam or air pocket products.  Designed by the multi award winning Wool Packaging Company, woolmail® uses the incredibly effective woolcool® insulation liners in A4 and A3 sized envelopes made from recyclable LDPE with an extra secure 15mm self-adhesive strip.

The insulation is made using pure sheep’s wool which maintains temperatures and minimises humidity through the natural ‘air conditioning’ effect of the hygroscopic fibres. Also crucial for the transportation of fragile products, the insulation is incredibly protective and cushioning due to the memory foam effect of the wool. Environmentally responsible too, wool is completely sustainable and biodegradable.

Not only does woolmail® perform better than the alternatives, but offers a cost effective solution for small and lightweight temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals. The minimum Royal Mail delivery charge for a parcel, such as an insulated polystyrene carton, is for weights up to 2kg and currently costs £4.41, whereas up to 1kg can be sent First Class by woolmail® for just £3.35.

In addition to the standard A4 and A3 sizes, The Wool Packaging Company also designs and manufactures bespoke woolmail® envelopes. As a further achievement on the night, organic food retailer, Abel & Cole, in collaboration with The Wool Packaging Company, were highly commended runners up in the Supply Chain Solution of the Year category.

Professional packaging designer, Angela Morris, conceived and developed woolcool® using British sheep’s wool which is available in abundance, completely biodegradable and nature’s original ‘smart fibre’ for insulation applications. • Sheep's Wool Insulated Food Packaging Honoured in Observer's Ethical Awards 2010
Sheep's Wool Insulated Food Packaging Honoured in Observer's Ethical Awards 2010

The innovative insulated packaging made from British sheep's wool, woolcool®, has been named runner-up in the prestigious Jupiter Big Idea category of the Observer's Ethical Awards 2010.

Woolcool® was designed and developed as a sustainable, biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable alternative to polystyrene and polyethylene insulated packaging boxes for the delivery of fresh and frozen foods, from farm shop retailers and speciality produce suppliers across the UK. Riverford Organic Farm and Abel & Cole are just two of the high profile customers, who also picked up Best Online Retailer and runner up respectively at the same awards.

To create woolcool®, abundant British sheep's wool provides a naturally effective insulation which is not only the environmentally responsible alternative to polystyrene but has also been proven to keep chilled contents more consistently cooler for longer. After washing  and scouring, with no need for high temperatures or harmful chemicals, the fleece is garneted, needle felted, cut into strips and sealed with recyclable, food grade MDPE. These are then used as insulation liners in a range of recycled and recyclable cardboard delivery boxes. The woolcool® boxes have been proven to keep chilled contents cool, below 5c for at least 24 hours and further information about the range of insulated packaging systems is available at www.woolcool.com.

A big achievement for The Wool Packaging Company Ltd. and for environmentally responsible packaging, the award was looking for big ideas that can help tackle climate change from companies who are pushing the boundaries of possibility. By reaching the final three, woolcool® was clearly recognised as a positive and practical business initiative that is rising to the challenge of reducing commercial packaging waste.

Among the factors the judges took account, are the following compelling facts about woolcool®:

    • Just 3 articulated lorries are required to delivery 10,000 units of woolcool® insulated packaging in comparison to 10 lorries to deliver the equivalent polystyrene packaging.
    • In 2009, woolcool® is estimated to have saved 65 tonnes of polystyrene or polyethylene from the perishable food delivery sector, much of which would have been sent to landfill.
    • Instead of being man-made from oil, woolcool® uses bi-product fleece of 22 million shearable sheep that are already being reared in the UK largely for meat and is manufactured through minimal, low energy processing.
    • Woolcool® is made entirely from materials that are compostable, biodegradable, recyclable or re-usable.

Demonstrating the breadth of entries in the Big Idea category, the innovative sheep's wool packaging was ultimately pipped to the post by Resomation's water/alkali alternative to burial and cremation, involving lower carbon emissions. The awards were voted for by over 8,000 Guardian readers and judged by a high profile panel ranging from Deborah Meaden, Kate Humble and Ben Fogle to the MD of Ecover, Michael Bremans and  former CEO of Cafe Direct, Penny Newman. The ceremony took place at the V&A Museum, London on Thursday 10th June with more information at www.observer.co.uk/ethicalawards.

  • Award winning Chai Stop frozen curries now delivered nationwide using eco friendly sheep’s wool insulation

    • Holistic health through ayurvedic properties of herbs and spices
    • Naturally grown local and organic produce

Chai Stop’s award winning authentic frozen curries hand-made in Minster, Kent are now available nationwide, thanks to the innovative use of sheep’s wool as an eco friendly insulating material.  A recent trial order successfully completed the 250-mile overnight trip to Bath.  The dishes arrived still completely frozen and the customer was so delighted that she has set up a weekly “curry club” for her friends.

Chai Stop’s Indian and Thai curries have been available to in East Kent direct from their own and local farm shops since 1999.   The company currently sells around 500 curries a week, with production set to double having just won a prestigious Taste of Kent Award for Best Kent Food Producer from Produced in Kent, allied to the nationwide distribution.

The company is run Tina Cesbron and Isobel Moore, who share a long-standing interest in holistic health from the ayurvedic properties of herbs and spices and, sourcing as much local produce as they can.  All its meat is reared outdoors and the vegetables, lentils and pulses are organic wherever possible.  All dishes are what and gluten free.
Indian customers are curious how “two English ladies” make curry just like their own mothers.   Testament to their skill is being asked to cater for Indian celebrations.  “The integrity of the cooking comes from years of experience, trying and testing recipes and listening to our customers,” said Tina Cesbron, who displays an honest love of cooking and a passion for naturally grown local produce.

Isobel’s father was bought-up India, spending the first few years in an orphanage. His mother meanwhile trained as a cook and went on to become head cook at the boarding school he attended, just to be close her son. Isobel has acquired a treasured hand-written book of recipes from this time.

Tina was brought up in the family catering business and after extensive travels to India, where she was trained by master in Indian cookery, she came back inspired by the sheer colour, vibrancy and variety of India that transcends into its food.

The curries are made in small batches of between 30 and 50 servings, “Any larger than that and it’s impossible to maintain the authentic taste of real curry,” said Tina.  “Despite following traditional family recipes which have been perfected over the years, each batch has tasted throughout preparation and the ingredients adjusted.”  With fresh and natural ingredients, the taste of spices can vary according to the weather conditions in which they were grown and harvested.

The business’s origins go back over 20 years – ladling-out platefuls of steaming homemade curries from a van, to hungry students at Kent University.  However, with small children and a van that kept breaking down, the pair would have “thrown-in the towel” but for a couple of mums at the school gate asking them to stock-up their freezers with the curries.

The Chai Stop came into being in 1999 when Tina and Isobel went into partnership, cooking at Isobel’s house in Whitstable. Business went from strength to strength, eventually outgrowing Isobel’s kitchen. A chance encounter led to Ebbsfleet Farm near Sandwich, where they were able to design and install their own kitchen in the original dairy. The recent addition of a new member of staff, who is being training in the art of cooking curry, takes the team to six.

Invigorated by the Taste of Kent Award, Chai Stop is making its frozen curries available nationwide.  Its delivery company uses sheep’s wool as an insulating material. Which is good news for the country’s sheep warmers.  International wool prices are at an historic low and wholesale prices do not cover the cost of shearing.  Some farmers are resorting to burning wool in the field.

Chai Stop offers a complete outside catering service for dinner parties, business seminars, fund raising events, weddings, private functions, and film locations    The services includes menu design, equipment, seating, table and tableware, waiting staff – even the washing up.

Main dishes cost around £4.95 to £5.95, vegetable dishes cost £3.60, dhals cost £3.40.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that originated in India around 3,000BC. The word Ayurveda is made from two Sanskrit roots “Ayu” and “Veda” which mean “life” and “knowledge.“ Ayurvedic principles hold that a person's well being is maintained through balancing their the three “Doshas”, in which herbal medicine and nutrition play a major role. The efficacious properties of many herbs and spices are well documented in modern science.  Fried almonds are used to treat coughs, cinnamon to sooth headaches, cloves to ease toothache, fennel to soothe sore throats, ginger to help with colds, arthritis and travel sickness, and garlic for blood pressure and rheumatism. Chilli gives a major boost to the metabolism
