Process
Using wool for insulation purposes on commercial scale is more straightforward, environmentally friendly and lower energy than manufacturing man-made insulation products.
- Our wool is sourced and processed specifically for The Wool Packaging Company so it doesn't contain additives, such as borate or polyester, found in other types of wool insulation.
- Fleeces are hand-pulled, washed and scoured in accordance with PPC regulations and ISO14001 environmental management systems, without the need for extreme temperatures, chemical treatments or additives.
- The nitrate and mineral rich ‘sludge’ is used as natural fertilisers or made into biodegradable slug pellets.
- Natural Lanolin is separated out for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
- The almost clear effluent water is naturally treated to Environment Agency standards.
- The fleece is garneted, needle-felted and cut into strips which are hygienically sealed within recyclable PE film with micro-perforations to allow the hygroscopic function.
- Energy used in the production of wool is 20% that of Nylon, 25% of Acrylic and 30% of Polyester (Source: IWTO 2009)
