The concept that proved a theory: Passive packaging that achieves 120 hours using natural materials

Woolcool® was launched in 2009 and the innovative, sustainable design has scooped an impressive haul of awards in the packaging, business and environmental arenas.

March, 2026

In 2015, a concept challenged the conventions of temperature-controlled packaging. Over a decade later, the thinking behind it is returning with a new generation of high-performance passive packaging.

LifeGUARDIAN®

When it comes to temperature-controlled packaging, wool is the natural answer to a global problem. It provides high performance, while also being an abundant, renewable, reusable and compostable material. Created by nature, driven by science. We have invested millions of pounds over the last two decades in research, development and testing to back up our innovations. That same spirit of creativity is what drives us on.

LifeGUARDIAN® was first introduced as a concept in 2015 at the Temperature Controlled Logistics Europe Conference, where it caught the attention of major players across the pharmaceutical sector, from global logistics providers to leading pharmaceutical manufacturers.

At the time, the idea challenged many of the conventions surrounding temperature-controlled packaging. The industry largely relied on polymer-based insulation systems combined with phase change materials to manage temperature during transit. These solutions are effective, but often bulky, complex and heavily dependent on synthetic materials.

LifeGUARDIAN® explored a different approach. The concept focused on using natural fibre insulation to create a high-performance passive packaging system capable of protecting valuable temperature-sensitive medicines during distribution, while remaining simple in design for ease of use.

The science behind this approach lies in the unique structure of wool fibres. Their natural crimp traps pockets of air, creating an effective barrier to heat transfer. These insulating properties, combined with wool’s ability to buffer moisture and maintain stable performance across changing conditions, make it a powerful material for temperature-controlled packaging.

While the concept arrived slightly ahead of the industry’s sustainability shift, the work behind it helped shape the development of Woolcool pharma-grade solutions. Today, these systems are widely used across pharmaceutical, veterinary, dental and cosmetic supply chains.

But the ambition behind  LifeGUARDIAN® never disappeared.

As global distribution networks evolve and temperature-sensitive medicines become more valuable and complex, supply chains need solutions that deliver reliable thermal performance while also reducing waste and operational complexity.

Sometimes innovation is not about adding more materials, but about using the right ones in the right way.

LifeGUARDIAN®

Our latest development returns to the principles behind the original concept, adopting four essential layers working together to maintain temperature stability during transit. The payload, a thermal core that stabilises temperature, a natural wool insulation ’fleece jacket’, and a protective transit carton.

Simple materials. Engineered performance.

At LogiPharma this year, we will be revealing how that concept has evolved.

Come and see us at Stand 90, 14th-16th April, Austria Centre, Vienna.
